Some good points in the article and comments, some stupid. Having lived on both coasts, up and down, I think I can offer some valuable insights.

As many have pointed out, the author clearly doesn't know where Silicon Valley is. But who cares?

The dumbest thing in the list is the point about Hawaii. The east coast has many more tropical paradise options, much closer. The Bahamas are a half hour flight from Florida, and you can even get to Cancun from NYC in about 3 hours. And Bermuda is easily accessible from anywhere on the east coast. Hawaii is actually a pretty long ways off the coast, a longer flight than most popular Caribbean destinations off the east coast. So the east coast wins the proximity to paradise contest hands down.

Fast food wise, In & Out kicks White Castle's ass easily.

California has much better weather and oodles of beaches. But California water is freezing, even in San Diego. It's literally colder than the north east beaches, which are warmed by gulf stream currents.

California is prettier overall, with the mountains and all. The east coast is very flat.

Florida does get very humid, but it has lots of awesome beaches and crystal clear springs inland to cool off in and great diving. You don't need a wetsuit.

California has great diving also.

Cost of living is cheaper on most of the east coast.

Overall I'd say the west coast is nicer, but it depends a lot on whether you're into outdoors activity.

You mean Canada? Hell yeah!

#8) Is anyone going to point out that #8 is a picture of motherfucking Chicago? (Which by the way is more East than West though appropriately midwestern... with many Jamba Juices establishments spiked with powdered health!)

#10) Would take weekend trips to Europe over Hawaii any day. Living so close to Montreal...Take that too.

#6) Seriously? Yeah, fuck SXSW in Austin the fact that Chicago invented House Music and pretty much everything about the arts in New York. Brilliant. Which leads me to…
#3) Get over yourself. Is this what laid-back is about? You're just jealous of us being better than you? Awesome. Well done.

I was raised in Massachusetts so I can't say that Massachusetts doesn't suck. In my opinion it does.. Most people I grew up with are stressed for no reason, impatient and scatter-brained. I have family members who live in the same building and don't make time for each other. It's not dysfunctional. It's Massachusetts. Although the Ivy league kids are always pleasant to meet and make this asshat state full of history and progressive politics a bit more pleasant.

I do have to say, though, I haven't met a more than a handful of people from the East Coast who would prefer to live out West. It's a difference of personality really, not jealously... not to say they don't complain about shit weather... but then again they tend to complain about everything. It's a way of communication there. So please don't flatter yourself. There's a place for everyone and it's not always out west.

IMO both coasts have elitist arrogance... but there are things to love / hate about both. I vote for #8, Chicago! Yeah thanks for adding that to the East Coast West Coast list!

10.) As awesome as Hawaii really is and as much as I want to visit there some day before I die, East Coast wins this one. I'd rather be closer to all the great cities in Europe than one tropical location.

9.) San Diego seems awesome, but billing it as "the perfect place to live" is solely based on opinion. What statistic do they have to back that up? My opinion based on rational thought is that "the perfect place to live" is where you have family and friends, not a place that seems nice. I live in a small town nobody reading this has ever heard of and I'd chose living here over San Diego any day. Also, after years of living anywhere it starts to become boring after a while. Thus, this argument is irrelevant.

8.) Western buildings are based on eastern structure. Although the buildings may be newer, a building is a building is a building. Might as well have some historic background to it. I don't care enough about this topic to declare a winner.

7.) This is why so many people from the west coast are overweight. You can enjoy your In-N-Out while we enjoy not being overweight and having terrible health conditions like you guys. East Coast wins.

6.) I've been to Hollywood, it's nice. But watching a movie in New York is exactly the same as watching a movie in Los Angeles. However, in New York there are better theater productions that can only be seen in New York. Also, as more of a sports guy, personally, we have better sports teams, especially in New York, Boston and Philadelphia, and our more heated rivalries are with other teams in the east because we don't care too much about western teams because people from the west care less about their teams, too. East coast wins big time!

5.) I've personally never been to Silicon Valley, but I'd be lying if I said I never use Google, Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo! or eBay. However, none of these companies could be possible without the invention of the computer which was first architectured at Harvard. Also, Facebook was started at Harvard and Microsoft was originally founded by Bill Gates when he was at, you guessed it, Harvard. In addition, the telephone was also invented in Massachusetts. Therefore, I believe that Massachusetts has had more contributions to modern technology than Silicon Valley.

4.) Sunsets? Well, when you put it like that I'm going to start packing my bags and head out west right now! You can have this one because I think your sunsets are better than our sunrises and I really don't feel like making an argument on such a stupid thing.

3.) That's just a stereotype. I love how half the people on here claim that being fake by having a fake personality and fake breasts is "just a stereotype" yet embrace the laid back attitute. Well, both of them are just stereotypes. Irrelevant argument.

2.) Although you have warmer weather, we have seasons. You'll never get to experience "walking in a winter wonderland" or the beautiful change of foliage. We get warm weather too, in the summer. It makes us appreciate it more. Also, the west coast gets earthquakes all the time. East coast wins this one.

1.) We have just as many beaches. Cape Cod is beautiful, so are the Virginia beaches and Carolina shores. And guess what, less tourists! There may be a lot of hot chicks on the beaches, but bikinis is a bad argument to make considering the east coast has a far lower obesity rate than the west coast. East coast wins again.

I have to agree. I grew up on the East coast in New England. There are parts of New England that are slightly more laid back, but social pressure always persists. Since everyone knows everyone, you are constantly aware of "where everyone is at" in life... People keep tabs on you and ask you personal questions all the time like, "when are you getting married?", "when are you having kids", "what are you working towards", etc. My husband who grew up in CA is never concerned with what other people think, whereas I struggle with this. If you are a non-conformist you can only exist in the cities..smaller and more affluent towns treat non-conformists with skeptisism or talk down to them. The way they look at it, they are driving down the property values by living there or they will influence their kids away from tradition. I used to cling to family and town traditions, but as I get older, they become more of a burden. I love my family and friends and don't need a weekly tradition to prove that to them. Lastly, the weather here sucks. Fall in New England is the only time worth living here. People here never tire of complaining about the weather. It's annoying. The east coast is like having a miserable jerk relative...you complain about them and they are miserable to be around, but then when an outsider call them out, you defend them irrationally.

That is a sweeping generalization that is nothing more than a belief without basis, founded on your own dysfunctional family and experience. For every dysfunctional family back east I can show you the same here on the west coast. Maybe you attract rude people that hold grudges.

Yeah and your face looks like a road map when it's that dry. Sure the humidity can be intolerable but it's actually more healthy than desert or dry weather

I grew up on the east coast. But I have living here in the west for the past five years. It is the balm. The last time I was back east was last year in November for a funeral. That is the only time my family wants to talk or even get together-when somebody dies. How pathetic. After that no one even speaks to one another or even wants to. What kind of a mentality is that?. Even the mentality of the east coast sucks. People are rude, always in a hurry, and their always holding a grudge about something. Out here in the west, people are friendly, laid back, and their not so judgemental. People out here are alot more open minded. Thumbs up for the west coast.
